Cassio Audi: The Teenage Phenom 30 Years Later

As a young teenager, at the age of 13, Cassio Audi dreamed of being in a heavy metal band. His favorite metal band in the mid-1980s was the legendary British band, Iron Maiden. The biggest challenge facing Cassio and his like-minded group of friends wasn’t their age, although that certainly was a challenge. The big problem was that they were in Brazil — not exactly at the forefront of the heavy metal phenomenon.

That was just a minor problem for Audi, who played the drums, because he just wanted to be in a band regardless if it were successful or not. So in 1985, he and four of his best friends, Yves Passarel, Pit Passarel, Andre Machado, and Felipe Machado formed a band and named themselves Viper. While metal was their genre of choice, the group could play power metal, alternative rock, and thrash metal as well. The results were amazing, as this group of teenage Brazilians took San Paulo by storm, but they didn’t stop there.

That same year, the band recorded a demo album that was given the name: The Killera Sword, and it was an instant success. After playing in clubs and events in their hometown of San Paulo to large crowds, the back released their first studio album, Soldiers of Sunrise, in 1987. With hits like Nightmares and Knights of Destruction, Viper became a household name in South America, playing on stages and radios across the continent. Metal magzines took notice and the band was featured on many magazine covers over the next couple of years. They played in shows all over North and South America and even went on a tour of Europe. Their music was fresh and there was one thing that made the band more unique than any other Brazilian group: the lyrics were in English but one couldn’t tell that it was their second language.

Cassio Audi left Viper in 1989 but has continued to enjoy playing the drums and there is even talk of a reunion. From a poor boy in Brazil to the stages of the United Kingdom, Cassio Audi has done it all.
