Betsy DeVos was recently chosen by President Trump to serve as the new Secretary of Education. Mrs. Devos has been married to her husband, Dick, for thirty years and they have four children. She is currently a co-chair of the Windquest group. This group is an investment firm involved with a variety of projects including clean-tech industry and technology. However, philanthropy should be Betsy DeVos’ middle name.
When looking at her resume, I am truly amazed by her commitment to children. Mrs. DeVos serves on the board of the following institutes where she provides guidance: DeVos Institute of Arts Management, American Federation for Children, ArtPrize, Philanthropy Roundtable, and American Enterprise Institute. DeVos is also a co-chair of the “Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation” According to dbdvfoundation.org, this foundation partners with four other family foundations to support community, education, arts, justice, and leadership in Michigan, her home state. It is uncertain how DeVos and her family choose recipients, but they do give. According to Forbes magazine, the DeVos family gave $90.9 million in 2013 to organizations to fund education, health and community, and arts and culture endeavors. $60 million of these donations stayed in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
One of the many benefits this foundation offers is to provide scholarships for underprivileged children to attend private schools through the Education Freedom Fund. Mrs. DeVos is truly a dynamic woman. This is obvious by her also chairing the American Federation for Children which has the primary goal of providing access to all schools to all students with school vouchers. Mrs. DeVos is also involved with the annual ArtPrize competition held in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. This competition brings 15,000 are students together to compete for $500,000 in prize money. The foundation also offers $200,000 in grants for the artists, educators, and venues that make the event possible. The “Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation” also provides financial support for the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital Pediatric Oncology Program which works to find cures for certain cancers. Finally, Mrs. DeVos is involved with the West Michigan Aviation Academy. This academy helps students achieve their life and career goals. I think Betsy DeVos philanthropy speaks for itself.
