Amicus Therapeutics: Changing The Lives Of Those With Rare Genetic Disorders

Amicus Therapeutics is a company that is dedicated to offering patients some of the most advanced treatments and therapies when it comes to an array of rare diseases. The company is also one of the few in the country that focus on treatments for patients who have been diagnosed with genetic disorders. The primary product that Amicus Therapeutics puts out is called migalastat, which is a drug that is given to patients who are in their late stages of Fabry’s disease. The product that the company produces is not made by any other company other than them, which is what has given this organization the edge in the medical and pharmaceutical industry.

The company was founded in 2002, and since then has grown to be one of the leading organizations of its kind. The company instantly started seeing positive results, which is why it expanded and opened up another center in the city of San Diego. The main headquarters of Amicus Therapeutics is located in New Jersey, and was started as a collaborative effort by three venture capitalist who wanted to invest in the industry and at the same time, provide researchers with the means to make a difference to those who have been diagnosed with diseases that don’t have cures as yet.

When it comes to the research that they do, Amicus Therapeutics always ensures that they follow three sharp points, qualifying them to then come under the research category of the organization, then allowing them to give the treatment to patients. All the research that is conducted is done only on diseases that are extremely rare and have devastating consequences, which don’t have much research on it already (GoogleFinance). Amicus Therapeutics believes in always providing their patients with the best care, and hence they choose those disorders that they know to have a good technological scope so that they can provide the best treatments. The treatments are then put out only after all the research shows conclusive results showing that the treatment can indeed be used to help the patients recover from their disorders. Their aim is to ultimately help patients who otherwise would not be able to see any hope for the treatment of their ailments.

The 3 Best Weight Loss Programs

It is everyone’s goal to stay healthy and be physically fit. Probably you want to shed off some extra weight as soon as possible. However, saying it is one thing and executing the plan is another. You try to do many different things, but still, you don’t see any tangible results. Rather than subjecting yourself to an endless series of torture, it would be wise if you try out some weight loss programs.

A weight loss program is a system that is designed by experienced nutritionists to help users cut down their weight and lead healthy lives. With hundreds of programs in the market, which one should you choose? We have highlighted three strategies that can help you achieve your weight-loss goals.

  1. Mayo Clinic Diet

Mayo Clinic Diet promises to help you lose up to 10 pounds within the first two weeks of use. It is an intense dieting program that can be used by anyone who is willing to get results faster. As the name suggests, it was developed by the Mayo Clinic franchise and apart from your food, it also focuses on your general lifestyle. It helps you to abandon old and unhealthy habits and adapt to new ones that can accelerate your weight loss process.

Mayo Clinic diet is divided into two major parts; Lose it and Live it. You will start by shedding weight, then focus on how to live the rest of your life without accumulating any more. When it comes to diet, food is divided into six groups which include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, unsaturated fats and some small amounts of sweet. Most of the recommended foods can be easily found at your favorite grocery store. Although it gives some allowance such as munching your pizza, it is entirely against alcohol.

When it comes to physical fitness, the program recommends that you perform moderate to strenuous exercises which should last for at least 30 minutes.

  1. The Nutrisystem Diet

Nutrisystem is the best solution for people who don’t like cooking but at the same time would want to lose some weight. It simplifies the whole dieting program, and you won’t have to worry about what food to include and what to leave out in your daily diet. It also spares you from the stress of worrying about the quantity of sugar or calories that your body is getting and the food portions that you should take. Despite all the freedom, the weight loss program restricts you from eating any food that you want.

Nutrisystem is sometimes referred to as an autopilot weight loss program, and this is because it takes care of everything. You will only be required to buy most of the food from Nutrisystem, and it will be delivered at your doorstep. You will be required to eat Nutrisystem on a daily basis starting from breakfast, lunch, dinner and even dessert. The program also includes some auxiliary foodstuffs such as fresh fruits and vegetables.

For breakfast, you can have granola, muffins and even pancakes. Nutrisystem lunch selection includes soup, chicken, pizza chili, and stew. It also recommends some tasty desserts such as cakes, cookies, and even brownies.  And as PureHealthyLiving shows, Nutrisystem cost is already on par with what you’re likely paying for meals now, so it’s not going to have an effect on your budget.

  1. Weight Watchers

Weight Watchers is a popular budget-friendly program that can help you achieve your health goals in a matter of weeks. Although it has been redesigned for several times, it still maintains its fundamental principle of eating what you love. Here there are no strict limitations on the foods that you eat, although it emphasizes on sticking to a healthy diet.

Weight Watchers has a new program known as Beyond the Scale. The purpose of this sub-program is to encourage mobility. The whole diet program does not just focus on the dieting aspect, but instead, it encourages you to engage in more physical exercises that can help to shed extra weight.

Weight Watchers is an online program, meaning that you can use it on your own. Through the program, you will be able to keep track of your food options, recipes, and exercises. There is also a chart where you can record your progress. The program has a one-on-one coaching option which can be accessed via phone, text and email platforms.

Nutritionists and health practitioners agree that discipline plays a significant role for anyone who is after losing weight. Regardless of the weight loss program that you use, try to be disciplined and consistent. These two virtues will help you gain more from the program.

Mid-Western Teen Is Almost Eight Feet Tall And Still Growing

Broc Brown is used to towering above his classmates. When he was in kindergarten, he had an astonishing height of five feet and two inches. Now, at the age of nineteen, he is seven feet and eight inches tall, and he is still growing, meaning he will get taller yet. He grows an average of six inches per year.

Broc Brown grows so much because he suffers from a rare disease, Sotos syndrome, or cerebral gigantism. Only around one baby in fourteen thousand are affected by this disease, although, some people say that since many babies who actually suffer from this disease are never diagnosed, the number is much higher, with one out of every five thousand, approximately, newborn babies suffering from this disease.

The truth is that although children with this disease grow at a much faster rate than their peers, at the time they are adults, their growing rate peters out, so that they have an average height at adult age. Thus, not only does Broc Brown have a rare disease, he is one of the few with this disease that have a way above average height as adults.

Broc’s mother told their local mid-western radio station that by the time he was in middle school, he was six feet tall, and by the time he entered high school, he was a whopping seven feet tall.

Besides for an abnormal growth rate, people who suffer from this rare disease often have other symptoms, such as deficit hyperactivity disorder and an explosive temper. Broc Brown himself suffers from both these problems, according to this mother.

Since he is so big, if he gets mad and he is not taking his medications, it can be a little dangerous. He can easily pop a hole in the wall if he gets mad, according to his mother. That does not happen, of course, since he is usually on medication. Inside, his mother claims, he has a really soft and gentle heart.

Broc can not even take any painkillers for the pain in his back because of curvature of the spine and narrowing of the spinal cord, since he only has one kidney from birth.

According to Dr. John Pappas of NYU, there is no known medication to stop this abnormal growing.

Scores of Students in Sacramento Area Sent Home For Lack of Immunization

Scores of students from around the Sacramento area were sent home from school this week for not bringing proof of vaccination. A new state law had taken effect on July 1. It requires children entering first and seventh grades to bring their immunization records. The law also applies to students that have transferred into a new district. The new law eliminates religious belief and personal philosophies as valid exemptions.

According to the California Department of Public Health, the state began requiring immunizations for schools in 1962. A vaccine for polio was the first one required. In 1978, laws were passed to require school districts to keep records of students’ vaccinations.

For years, parents were allowed to exempt their children from vaccinations for personal or religious reasons. During 2014 and 2015, there were several outbreaks of measles that infected a total of over 850 people. The largest outbreak was linked to a measles case in Disneyland; 131 people were infected. That outbreak led lawmakers in California to impose the strict new law requiring vaccinations and making it harder to get exemptions. Governor Jerry Brown passed the law last year and made California the third state in the country to eliminate religious and personal belief exemptions.

Despite the new law, 145 out of the 3200 students in the Folsom Cordava Unified School District were sent home for not having proof of vaccination. According to a spokesman, Daniel Thigpen, the students’ parents were expected to take them to clinics and get them vaccinated. By Friday, however, 98 students had still not been vaccinated.

By contrast, the Natomas Unified School District, which has a total of 1462 first- and seventh-graders, had a perfect attendance on their first day of school. According to spokesman Jim Sanders, the district had spent the summer educating parents about the need for vaccinations. They also held vaccination clinics. By the time school started, district officials had identified 157 children who still had not been vaccinated. The school dealt with 103 of these on the spot, either by sending their parents to get the paper work or vaccinating the youngsters at an on-site clinic. Some of the remaining 54 turned out to have transferred to other districts. Officials are still working to get the others properly vaccinated.

Students in California Without Vaccination Proof Being Sent Home on First Day of School

Loads of students in the Sacramento area were sent home at the start of the school year this week for not having proof of vaccination when they showed up to start either their kindergarten or seventh grade year, according to an article posted on The Sacramento Bee.

Due to a new state law that was implemented on July 1st of this year, families that had the option to avoid vaccinating their children due to religious or personal beliefs was eliminated. This new law requires that students entering two school checkpoints- kindergarten and seventh grade- have to show proof of proper vaccinations. This will also apply to any students that transfer into the district during the year.

The Folsom Cordova Unified School District reported that out of the 3,200 students starting both kindergarten and seventh grade, 145 of them were sent home for not having the proper vaccination records. Daniel Thigpen, a spokesman for the district, said that out of the students that were sent home Tuesday that 72 were from kindergarten and that 73 were from seventh grade. The Folsom Cordova District is hoping that the parents will take their children to the vaccination clinics to receive their shots so that they may return to class as soon as possible. The district is reporting that as of Friday, there were only 98 students that were still not in school, 37 from the kindergarten grade and 61 from seventh grade.

The Natomas Unified School District reported that no students were sent home on the first day of school due to their vaccination records not being up-to-date. Spokesman for the district Jim Sanders said that they had taken proactive measures to ensure that parents were informed about the necessary vaccinations. The district alerted parents over the summer about the regulation changes and held vaccination clinics. On the first day of school, 103 students arrived that were not vaccinated. Out of those 103 students, the parents either returned the same day with the proper paperwork or they took their child to a mobile clinic to get the proper shots the same day.

Homelessness and Mental Health in San Francisco

Huffington Post recently released a piece advocating for a greater focus on mental health care, especially to the homeless in San Francisco and elsewhere.

Homelessness in San Francisco, and in so many communities up and down the West Coast, is an epidemic, and it’s one we’re not dealing with effectively. As tech companies come into San Francisco, more and more people are being priced out of their homes. Some of these people leave the city for more affordable communities, and some of these people become homeless. That does not mean these people are not equal citizens, but it does mean that our system has failed them and that we ought to support them however we are able to.

Part of that means realizing that mental health is an issue that is disproportionately relevant to those who might be homeless for many reasons. Many of the people who become homeless become so after years of untreated mental health issues that finally manifested themselves into a person’s inability to maintain a job and housing. Many people develop mental health issues while homeless as research suggests that the homeless are more likely to be victims of crime than the general public. These aren’t people looking for an easy buck on the street. These are people who often need help from the system in order to get up.

We can do more for our homeless population, especially as it relates to the mental health care available to them, in San Francisco and everywhere else too.
