Why Westerners Love California

In a recent article published by Huffington Post, author Jessica Anderson lists several reasons that Westerners enjoy living in California. With 34 million residents and thousands of Americans moving into the state on a daily basis, California is the largest and one of the most populous states in the United States. New comers visit and move to the state for a plethora of reasons, including career advancement, real estate acquisition, and tourism. Anderson states that Westerners enjoy visiting and relocating to California primary because of the outdoor scenery, warm environment, quiet lifestyles, organic materials, and festive restaurants. Ultimately, Anderson expresses the view that the serenity and freedom involved in daily life on the west coast is vastly superior to her east cost counterparts.

One of the key benefits of living in or visiting the West Coast is the experience of ideal weather conditions. California has extremely pleasant year-round temperatures, making the state ideal for both tourism and the production of many crops. California’s mild climate has historically made it a beacon for growth and prosperity and has contributed largely to the burgeoning job market. The weather is also beneficial because of the enormous amount of beaches that exist in the state. As a coastal state that is completely bordered by the Pacific Ocean on the west side, a large portion of California’s revenue comes from beach tourism. The mild and sunny climate of the West drastically impacts the coastal state’s ability to draw Americans from all walks of life.

Anderson also draws a parallel between Westerners love for California and the state’s residents easy, breezy lifestyle. As one of the largest importers and developers of organic produce in the United States, California has developed a reputation for an unconventional, bohemian-styled lifestyle. Although this lifestyle is not viewed by most Americans as substantial or productive, it is an undeniable draw for a people who naturally exist in a state of perpetual labor in an increasingly stressful world. The fact that California has always been a beacon of light to citizens from all over the United States of America can hardly be refuted. According to Jessica Anderson, there is no place on earth that offers the scenery, peace, or tranquility as does the west coast of the United States.

Ricardo Lara’s Legislation Set To Overhaul the Dialysis Industry In California

A bill that was introduced by the incumbent member of the California state Senate, Ricardo Lara could significantly change the dialysis modus operandi in the state. The bill was created to necessarily improve the treatment and general services that were provided to dialysis patients. These anticipated changes are going to be characterized by; a mandatory annual inspection of the dialysis machines and the centers as well and a 45-minute transition break between patients to enable the center’s employees to clean the machines thoroughly. Infections were recognized as one of the leading causes of death during the course of dialysis and served as an incentive for pursuing the passing of the legislation.

The center workers and patients were receptive to this bill due to the positive implications that it would have. However, the doctors and Dialysis Center management strongly opposed this bill citing that it would be an unnecessary inclusion to the existing safety measures. They even claimed that this legislation would pose as a potential harm to the patients and ultimately lead to the closing down of these treatment centers. The bill would bring about a myriad of issues that would translate to the patients not being able to access treatment conveniently. The California Dialysis Council were quick to point out that these treatment centers in the state already obliged to 346 federal safety and quality prerequisites.

Companies Monopolizing The Dialysis Industry

Two primary companies control over 70% of all the Dialysis Centers in the country. DaVita Healthcare Partners which is located in Colorado and Fresenius Medical Care, a German-based multinational have a presence in 3900 locations in the country. John Oliver a prominent HBO personality looked into the monopoly that is enjoyed by these two companies in the keeping dialysis functions running.

It is reported the up to 63000 people in California go through hemodialysis. This translates to a lucrative business that was incepted by a bill that was passed in 1972. The bill was an amendment to the Medicare bill and stipulated that anyone who needed dialysis should have access to it immediately. The alteration in the law meant that anyone with kidney complications would receive universal health coverage.

The bill is set to advance to the next stage after a voting process on June 2nd. The Dialysis Center workers and patients are confident about the outcome of the legislation.

Record Landslide in California’s Big Sur Adds to $1 Billion in Highway Damage

A section of California’s Highway 1 was covered by a massive landslide last weekend, adding to over $1 billion in highway damage for the state since the beginning of winter.

The landslide, taking place in the Big Sur area, resulted in a 40-foot layer of rock and dirt covering a portion of Highway 1. The debris is estimated to be more than 1 million tons, and covers a quarter mile stretch of road. This is the largest landslide recorded in state history.

“We haven’t been able to go up there and assess. It’s still moving,” said Susana Cruz, a spokesman for Caltrans, the California Department of Transportation. “We have geologists and engineers who are going to check it out this week to see how do we pick up the pieces.”

The landslide occurred in a section of Big Sur called Mud Creek, an area that was already inundated with landslides resulting from California’s historically wet winter. Restoration efforts for these other slides were called off while authorities waited for the ground to stabilize after this most recent disaster.

The falling rock was significant enough to alter the coastline below the highway, as shown by video from the local sheriff’s department.

“The slide went from bad to worse over the weekend and the video will give you a glimpse at the undertaking needed to open the road again,” said the sheriff’s department via Facebook.

Workers at Caltrans had a feeling there would be heavy activity in the area, and removed their equipment from the stretch of Highway 1 almost a week ago.

“We were fearful that something could happen,” said Caltrans spokesman Jim Shivers. “We didn’t think it would be anything like this.”

Currently the road remains closed and there’s no estimate as to when the road will be open or how much the clearing effort will cost. The road closures have resulted in the isolation of Big Sur residents and a detriment to local businesses. Big Sur Chamber of Commerce President Kirk Gafill owns a restaurant that is currently seating

two to three dozen diners a day, as opposed to 600 to 1,000 normally.

In total, over 61 miles of Highway 1 have been closed this year, topping $1 billion in damage.

Marches Planned in Over a Dozen Californian Coties

Over ten thousand people are expected to March today in over a dozen Californian cities to support workers rights and immigration policies.

The expected number of marchers of more than ten thousand are likely to be supporters of unions and less restricted immigration policies. Immigration policies in California have become significantly relaxed in recent years with most areas of California issuing drivers licenses and other forms of identification cards even without documentation of an individual’s legal immigrant status.

The interest in these protests and marches have fluctuated significantly. The largest I California in 2006 in order to protest an immigration enforcement bill that would have restricted immigration in the state and would have enforced non-compliance. In 2006, over one million people marched in protest of this bill.

The Trump administration has made one of their focuses to be the elimination of illegal immigration and the deportation of illegal immigrants California voted sharply in favor of Democratic Candidate Hillary Clinton as opposed to the eventual winner Donald Trump and his attempts to enforce existing immigration rules have already sparked outrage in California. The State of California has announced that any contracting firms that will help to build the proposed border wall will not receive future contracts for construction work done by the State of California, as part of a blacklisting campaign. This current tension in California over immigration and immigrant rights may spark support for these protests and marches and considerably swell the number of individuals who will be partaking in the marches.

May 1st is the internationally recognized Worker’s day and many supporters of unions will also get behind this event. Over a hundred groups are expected to participate in the march. Protests are expected to occur in over a dozen cities in California, spread out from Los Angeles to Santa Clara. In Los Angeles, the event will be run by The May Day Coalition of Los Angeles and will start at City Hall.

Many of the immigrant groups feel as if their communities have been singled out by the Trump administration including the Mexican, Muslim, and Korean population and are expected to show up in force to support the protests. The May day marches were originally in support for workers but have now moved towards combining this with immigrant rights.

California And The Threat Of Being Overrun

California is located on the west coast of the United States, alongside Oregon and Washington. Being located on the borders of the country and the ocean, there is always the danger of buildings being overrun by the water.

Researchers have found out that the levels of the sea that wash the shores of California could be raising its height tremendously, enough to scare scholars and students of the effects of global warming. The maximum height that it can achieve turned out to be much more than expected, to about 10 feet until the end of the century.

If that happened, many buildings would get overrun by the water, including two important airports in Oakland and San Francisco. It is certainly enough to pose a significant threat to Californian citizens that live close to the shore.

Louisiana is another loser in the matter of rising sea waters. Researchers stated that it’s possible that almost 2,250 square miles of their coast get completely overrun by water in a couple of decades. Miami is also another big loser.

The biggest danger remains to the Californian state since it has a very low altitude and will get completely overrun if the water levels reach a point that they can rise above the sand of the beach. It shouldn’t take too long, as the sea level seems to be increasing exponentially faster than the levels of the other American cities and states close to the borders of the country.

For more information about the potential disaster for California, read this article from Huffington Post: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/california-sea-level-rise_us_59027f0fe4b0bb2d086c5f31

All the data that is being developed by the global climate researchers is being targeted towards 2100 and how the current activities of the human being can affect the sea levels that the Americans will have to deal with for the rest of the century.

For example, specialists concluded that at least 50% of the beaches of California would get overrun by the sea level if the polar ice caps continue to melt and increase the global levels of the ocean.

Up to thirty million people across the United States could lose their homes and commerce during the rest of the century. Florida is in extreme danger, and America will indeed experience a massive exodus from the coastline of the country for the next couple of years as the word of this catastrophic event gets more prevalent among citizens.

Statewide Health Plan In California Possible

California is poised to make a universal health care plan available to residents who live in the state. Lawmakers are in the home stretch of working out the details and hope to be able to finalize a plan as soon as possible. The plan that will be created will give insurance coverage to undocumented residents as well. This is a first in the country, but at least the state is willing to try to come up with a solution that works for everyone instead of the disaster that has been created with Obamacare.

It seems as though everyone will benefit from the plan that is created, even seniors who have Medicare and other federal and state assistance. The one thing that needs to be addressed is how much it will cost. There will likely be a process in getting money from Washington to flow to the funded program as it will be like a trust fund that will provide coverage for everyone. If California can show that this type of health plan can work, then it might be an idea that is adopted by other states. California is one of the largest states in the country, and to give everyone healthcare is a small challenge in itself, but if it’s run the right way and the system works, then it would be something that would help so many people who can’t afford the coverage that is needed for basic services.

The system is easy to understand. Residents wouldn’t buy an individual policy that changes every month. They would simply pay a tax fee that would go into an account for the coverage. If the fees are adjusted the right way, some people might pay less for coverage than they would if they had private insurance, which would also be a benefit for many people who pay based on how much money they make.

California Receives Surprising Amount of Snow Pack

Over the past decade, one of the largest focuses in the State of California has been on the lack of water in lakes and rivers around the state. The continued annual decline in water in the spring months had many people concerned that there could be a major water shortage within the next few years.

While water shortage in California will always be a concern for residents and government officials, a recent news article (https://www.usnews.com/news/us/articles/2017-03-30/deep-spring-snow-means-california-could-ease-water-conservation-rules) has pointed out that the concerns could be relieved for at least one year. During the 2016 and 2017 winter, many people that liked to snow recreationally have enjoyed the fact that the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Lake Tahoe region have received a significant amount of snow. While most people knew that there was a lot of snow in the region for skiing, the actual level of snowpack has been surprising.

Based on recent tests in the area, there is currently around 46 inches of snow packed snow in the Lake Tahoe region mountains. While this has been great for skiers, it has also been a huge relief for people that were concerned about the continued level of drought in California. That amount of snow in Lake Tahoe is equal to about 180 percent of the normal snowpack this time of the year. Overall, mountains in California have around 150 percent of the typical snowpack.

Over the next few months, the snow on the top of the mountains will continue to melt and will eventually make its way down the mountain into the rivers and lakes below. At this point, it is not considered to be much of a concern, but some believe that if it melts to soon it could cause some minor flooding. While the State of California appears to have enough snow to alleviate drought concerns for at least one year, the state will continue its efforts to conserve water as much as possible. Over the past few years, they have been able to introduce a number of regulations that have helped to reduce water usage by as much as twenty-five percent in some areas.

Giants Look to Compete Against Cubs

Heading into the 2016 major-league baseball playoffs, the San Francisco giants were considered one of the favorites to advance to the World Series. The Giants were fan favorites and expert picks due to their recent successes that includes winning 3 championships in the past 7 years. Their goal of winning another title seemed to get off to a great start after they won the Wild Card game in the National League Playoffs over the New York Mets. While they started off great, a recent news article (http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/page/playoffs16_nldsgame3sfchc/nlds-chicago-cubs-san-francisco-giants-mega-preview-win-game-3) has pointed out that the Giants are in a tough fight against the Chicago Cubs.

On Friday and Saturday night against the Cubs, the Giants got off to a tough start. In Game 1 of the Divisional Round of the playoffs, the Cubs ended up scoring a key run in the bottom of the 8th inning and held on to win a tight game by the score of 1-0. During Game 2, the Cubs started off quite hot and ended up winning by the score of 5-2 despite losing their starting pitcher early in the game due to injury.

After the first two games were played in Chicago, the series now has shifted to San Francisco where the Giants will host Game 3 on Monday night and potentially Game 4 on Tuesday night if the Giants are able to win on Monday. Monday night has a lot of potential to be an absolute classic matchup. The Giants will be led by Madison Bumgarner who is well regarded for being one of the best playoff pitchers of all time. The Cubs, on the other hand, will be led by Jake Arrietta who is the reigning Cy Young award winner.

If the Giants are able to get by the Cubs in Game 3, they still have a tough road ahead as they will have to win both Game 4 and Game 5 in order to advance. The winner of hte series will end up facing either the Washington Nationals or the Los Angeles Dodgers in National League Championship Series.

QVC Continues to Expand Footprint by Building New Distribution Center in California

QVS is well known for being the owner and operator of the Shopping Network on television and also being one of the largest e-retailers in the world. While the company has a very dedicated group of customers and has hundreds of millions of dollars in sales each year, their lack of presence in retail malls can be a disadvantage. The main way that they are able to compete with other retailers is finding the quickest ways to get products to their consumers. According to a recent news article (http://www.businessinsider.com/qvc-opens-first-west-coast-distribution-center-2016-8), QVC is taking major steps to ensure they are able to service their customers’ needs on the West Coast.

QVC recently announced that they would be opening their first distribution center on the West Coast of the United States. While the company has typically operated out of distributions centers in the Midwest, the growing communities located across the West Coast and favorable demographics made it perfectly clear that having a West Coast distribution center would be a huge advantage. This should greatly cut down the speed and cost that it takes to deliver products to customers on that side of the Untied States.

Due to its proximity to a variety of highways and close proximity to the major cities in Southern California, QVC ultimately chose to Ontario, California as the destination for their new facility. The online retailer has been preparing the new space for months, but officially held its opening ceremony on Monday.

While the facility will be advantageous for QVC, it will please a variety of other groups of people as well. The Inland Empire and Ontario, CA area should experience some modest job growth. The company has already hired around 500 people to start working and another 500 people are expected to be hired to manage the new 1 million square foot property in the next few years. The new property will also be carbon footprint conscious, as it will greatly reduce the amount of miles that QVC needs to drive. It has been estimated that trucking miles will be reduced by as much as 10 million per year.

Overuse of Water Continues Amid California Drought

California is in the middle of a long, seemingly unending drought, but that does not stop the widespread abuse of water restriction policies that are currently in place. Not only are private citizens being cited for watering lawns and otherwise overusing water, but the city of Los Angles recently made headlines for watering fake grass.

Accordign to an article in CBS news, the Los Ángeles Deparment of Water and Power, which makes many of the rules regarding local water restrictions, appears to be violating some of its own policies. The DWP installed fake grass on their lawn in order to reduce the amount of water that they use so that they can stay within their own departmental policies. They are also looked up to as an example for the appropriate way to behave during a drought.

But CBS Los Angeles investigated and discovered that the DWP is watering this grass for a few minutes each week, which not only is a potential waste of water, but also causes grey water to run off into the very limited supply of drinking water. The drought in California causing serious problems for people in some parts of California, who are finding they do not have enough clean water for drinking or bathing. The report also angered neighbors because they have been following the stricter water restrictions that the DWP has created.

For it’s part, the DWP says that they are simply trying to keep the fake grass clean. They insist that they are trying to wash off dog pee. While this seems like it could be a legitimate concern, as there is no reason to keep watering grass that does not grow, it begs another question. It seems like there must be some other way for the fake grass to stay clean without causing water to run off and be wasted, even if it takes longer and is a little more work.

Using as little extra water is incredibly important in California where droughts have plagued the state for decades. The population continues to grow, taxing the limited natural resources the state has. Envromental problems also contribute to the drought in California, and until these issues are resolved, following the water restrictions is very important for everyone in Calfornia.
