Rocketship Education is a California based non-profit charter school network. The network was established in 2007 by Preston Smith and John Danner. In order to increase student achievement, the charter School network uses adaptive software and a blended learning model. The network has sixteen charter schools located in different areas around the country such as Washing DC, Milwaukee, Nashville, Concord California, Redwood City, New Orleans and San Jose. There are many neighborhoods in the United States that have limited access to excellent schools, and this network was specially set up to assist low-incoming students in such neighborhoods to access quality education. Apart from educating students, the network also inspires the community by engaging parents and empowering teachers.
Low-income elementary students are major beneficiaries of Rockeship education. Students from non-English speaking homes and low-income homes find it hard to attain the required standards of education, but that is no longer the case. In fact, 90% of students in these schools come from low income families. Rockeship parents play a significant role in the overall growth of the network. The parents are given an opportunity to demand for educational equity from elected officials, serve on parent advisory committees, and even volunteer in the classroom.
All the schools under the Rockectship network adopt data-driven instruction and personalized learning. The schools are able to deliver personalized learning because of parent engagement. The network focuses on gap-closing academic growth through community building events, morning coffees, parents’ conferences and regular home visits. The charter schools have also been at the forefront when it comes to individualized teaching by allowing teachers to integrate digital learning into their teaching. The learning model targets specific student needs. The teachers in these institutions have greater control when it comes to making program decisions and assigning content.
Rocketship Education is able to meet the unique needs of each student by integrating its instructional model with blended learning programs. Group instruction is only applied for lessons that require teams or large groups. Moreover, personalized learning is achieved by combining data systems, online tools, student agency, and teacher insights in addressing the unique needs of each student. Rocketship Education leaders and teachers are able to create transformational schools as a result of extensive training and development.
