Betsy DeVos: Public Team Player and Tenacious Political Player

As she heads towards the end of her first year as U.S. Secretary of Education, political leaders and others are learning a bit more about Betsy DeVos. DeVos serves as the Secretary of Administration in the Cabinet of President Donald Trump.

The confirmation process for DeVos fairly can be described as rocky. Her confirmation hearing was tough. She barely won confirmation to the positon, the Vice President called in to break a tie vote.

Once over the hurdle of getting confirmed, DeVos went directly to work. One of the first steps she took was to reach out to the leaders of the two largest school teachers unions. She asked to meet with these union officials. One responded immediately and opened a line of communication with the Secretary. The other has decided to take a wait and see approach, electing to make a decision as to whether or not to maintain regular communication with DeVos at a later date.

Early during her tenure, DeVos was faced with Trump contemplating overturning an Obama era policy that addressed the use of public school bathrooms by transgender individuals. President Barack Obama established a policy that permitted public school students the ability to select a restroom to use based on their personal gender identity. Trump indicated his desire to overturn the policy.

DeVos initially was opposed to overturning the Obama Administration policy regarding transgender students and restrooms. She lobbied the President privately to keep the Obama policy in place. In the end, Trump did not agree with DeVos and announced his decision to reverse the Obama policy.

Once the President made his decision, DeVos was on board. In fact, she spoke at a major conservative convention after the President’s policy was announced. She spoke in a manner that made it impossible to ascertain that she ever opposed the President’s decision.

Prior to the President announcing the policy change, DeVos called representatives of LGBT and transgender employees in the Department of Education to meet with her. She told these individuals of the upcoming policy change. She also explained that she had been opposed to the policy alteration, and had tried to convince the President to keep the Obama policy in place. She did explain that once the President made his decision, she would have to stand by the chief executive.

When coming to Washington to be part of the Trump Cabinet, many D.C. insiders wrote DeVos off as a lightweight novice. In fact, before starting her tenure with the Trump Administration, DeVos had a great deal of political experience under her belt. Learn more: http://www.betsydevos.com/education/

DeVos served as the Chairman of the Michigan Republican Party. Her husband ran for Governor of Michigan.

In addition, she has long been an advocate for school choice. In this regard, she has been heavily involved in campaigns in different states on behalf of school choice. This includes successful voucher campaigns in a number of locations. She is described by her colleagues as being a highly skillful political strategist and a tireless advocate for causes in which she believes.

Poisonous Snake Washes Up on the California Coast

A poisonous yellow-bellied sea snake drifted ashore on Tuesday at Newport Beach. The species is not typically found in Southern California and rarely ventures on land. The Pacific Marine Mammal Center and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles warned on Thursday that the snake’s encroachment into California waters could mean that rising water temperatures will bring more of the venomous reptiles into the area.

Only four other sightings of yellow-bellied sea snakes have been recorded in California history. Previously, snakes drifted ashore in 2015 and 2016 at Oxnard, Coronado and Bolsa Chica State Beach. Scientists state that this is the first visit from the species in Southern California that has not coincided with an El Niño effect. The Pacific Marine Mammal Center warned that this unexpected visit could indicate a drastic shift in marine life migration patterns due to warming sea temperatures.

Southern California also saw an uptick in sea lion strandings in the latter half of 2017. Such strandings typically coincide with periods of higher-than average water temperature. Scientists fear that these signs point to another cycle of warm water similar to the one in 2015 and 2016 that claimed an unprecedented number of sea lion lives.

Yellow-bellied sea snakes typically live their whole lives at sea and never come ashore. The poisonous snakes inhabit warm tropical waters from East Africa to Hawaii and Central America. The snakes mainly hunt by floating on the surface of the ocean and kill their prey by injecting them with venom. The majority of humans who have been bitten by the yellow-bellied sea snakes are fishermen who accidentally catch the snakes in their nets.

The stranded sea snake was considered too ill to survive and was euthanized by animal control officials on Wednesday. Herpetologists took a DNA sample from the snake and identified it as a female. The snake’s body was given to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles where it will be studied and displayed. Scientists also asked beachcombers to be on the lookout for more of the distinctive yellow snakes, so they can track the reptiles’ new migratory patterns.

California Hit By Dangerous Mudslides

After suffering from some of the worst wildfires in the history of California, the state is now dealing with a different problem, mudslides. The state has been receiving heavy rains, something that should be welcomed in a state that is constantly suffering in a drought state, but there have been unwelcomed consequences as the mudslides continue to worsen.

People are now trapped in their homes, some even in their cars as the state rushed to shut down highways in the early dark of Tuesday morning. So far, there are at least fifteen people who have perished, but the number is expected to rise as the mudslides continue. Authorities are rushing to offer aid and rescues where they can, and they have noted that so far, at least three homes in Santa Barbara county have been completely lost.

The conditions near Santa Barbara worsened rapidly as the mudslides cut a gas line that then caused a fire that spread through out a few homes in the area. Responders were delayed in reaching the scene due to waist deep mud and downed trees and wires caused by the slides. Helicopters are being used in order to reach people, but that takes time and is tricky. Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown noted that the area looked like a battlefield from World War I.

Numerous highways around Santa Barbara have been shut down, and once day light broke on Tuesday morning it was much easier to survey the scene. Mud, boulders and branches covered roadways and had crashed into numerous homes. Homes are filled with mud, cars were shoved into trees, and the entire area was bathed in mud and debris. One resident, Benjamin Hyatt, had to be rescued from his roof after his house became surrounded by mud, even sending a washing machine into his front yard. Areas that were damaged in the recent wildfires would be more prone to flash flooding due to them being less absorbent due to being burned. This means that water will run across some of these dirt areas as if it were pavement, washing silt, debris and ash along with it into nearby areas. For pictures and more details on the damage, head to the Huffington Post.

Many residents feel that in some ways, these mudslides are far worse than the devastating fires the state just suffered through. Between droughts, wildfires, heat waves, and heavy winter rains, the effects of climate change on the state of California seem quite clear. The pattern is changing and shifting, and the West Coast is suffering.

What Constitutes a Hero?

In this day and age when a person deciding to intervene on another’s behalf in the midst of a crisis could well be punished with harm to his own person, it is comforting to see the human spirit triumph. A man whose own home had been damaged by the mudslides in Montecito stepped in and rescued a baby who was buried four feet under mud. This man could arguably be called a hero.

There are no superheroes to call upon in such situations of human tragedy. A kind smile, an encouraging word, a good deed are all superhero acts performed by unassuming people, people not acting out of self-interest but people who step out of their comfort zone to help another in need.

God only knows where that baby’s parents could have been. They were probably themselves swallowed by mud. A baby’s cries heard in the middle of such devastation could be a whisper of life amid tragedy, crying for expression. Will this man get any accolades after the mud settles? Probably not. But because of him, that baby will get a chance at life. Such a profound thought about the circle of life. There were dead counted among the debris, but life has a strange way of renewing itself. Death and rebirth amid human tragedy witnessed in a California town.

One never knows how one will react in an emergency situation, but it is comforting to know that life prevailed over death, certain death, and that an innocent baby’s life was spared, which is a miracle in itself.

Next time a tragedy strikes, it would be worthwhile to look for the unsung heroes whose humanitarian efforts may have altered the course of one life with a simple, unassuming word or deed. These are true heroes, not looking for fame or fortune, just your unassuming guy on the street who decides to step in and do his small part, whatever he can, who is a true hero.

Stolen Classic Car Resurfaces in Los Angeles

A Michigan man has recovered his vintage automobile in Los Angeles after posting a plea on Facebook. Rock Stevens of Port Huron, Michigan was devastated when his 1958 Jaguar XK150 was stolen from its storage facility in the eastern Michigan town. A resident of Applegate, a town 30 miles north of Port Huron, saw his social media posts and notified him that she had seen his antique car in her neighbor’s yard.

Stevens first purchased his vintage car in 1978. For the past 25 years, he has kept the Jaguar safely tucked away in the garage of a house that he used to own. The new owner agreed to keep the car onsite after he purchased the home from Stevens. However, the house’s owner later moved to Cleveland, Ohio, leaving the home unoccupied. The car thief entered the home through a side door and removed the bolts from the garage door, allowing him to drive the antique car out the garage. The thief then replaced the bolts, hoping to avoid detection.

After the theft, Stevens alerted the police and Keith Merritt of the Port Huron Police Department’s Criminal Investigative Division was assigned to his case. After receiving the information from Stevens’ Facebook query, the detective discovered that the thief was a neighbor of the home owner. According to Merritt, the thief stole the automobile to recoup a debt that the house’s owner owed him. When questioned, the burglar readily admitted that he took the car and sold it to the Beverly Hills Car Club, a classic car dealership in Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles police plan to return the Jaguar to Stevens in Michigan, pending positive identification of the valuable car. The thief, whose name has not yet been revealed, is expected to be arraigned for car theft sometime this week. Although the police did not disclose the total value of the car, a similar Jaguar sold for more than $500,000 at auction in 2015.
